The Harrisburg Housing Authority (HHA) is committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of all our residents. As part of this commitment, we’d like to inform you about new smoke alarm regulations that will be in effect starting December 29, 2024.

These regulations are based on the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Standard 72 and align with the Public and Federally Assisted Housing Fire Safety Act of 2022. Their purpose is to ensure your home has the best possible fire protection through properly functioning smoke alarms.

Here’s what you need to know:

  • Locations: Smoke detectors must be installed inside and outside of each bedroom, within 21 feet of bedroom doors, and on every level of the building, including basements and attics.
  • Types: Smoke detectors must be either hardwired or have a sealed 10-year battery. This eliminates the need for frequent battery changes.
  • Mounting: Wall-mounted smoke alarms must be between 4 and 12 inches from the ceiling. Ceiling-mounted alarms must be more than 4 inches from the wall.
  • Placement: Smoke alarms should not be installed within 36 inches of windows, exterior doors, or ducts.

Why are these changes important?

Early detection of a fire is crucial for saving lives and property. Properly placed and maintained smoke alarms can provide those precious seconds needed to escape a burning building.

What do you need to do?

HHA maintenance staff will be conducting inspections throughout December 2024 to ensure all units comply with the new regulations.

However, you can take proactive steps in the meantime:

  • Review your existing smoke alarms: Check their location, type (battery-powered or hardwired), and age. If they don’t meet the new requirements, consider replacing them before the December deadline.
  • Test your smoke alarms monthly: This ensures they are functioning properly.
